How to Register with NHIMA in Zambia
NHIMA membership gives you and your dependants access to health cover at accredited facilities. This guide explains the registration process, with pre-filled sample forms so your application is accepted the first time.
1Check which category you fall under
NHIMA covers formal-sector employees registered through their employer, self-employed and informal-sector members who register directly, and dependants added to a principal member's account.
2Gather your documents
You need your NRC, a passport-size photo, and your NAPSA or TPIN details where applicable. Dependants need birth certificates or NRCs, and a marriage certificate for a spouse. Employers need the PACRA certificate and TPIN.
3Complete the registration form
Fill in the member or employer registration form with personal details, contact information, employment details, and the dependants you want covered. Every name must match the supporting ID exactly.
4Submit and capture biometrics
Submit the form at a NHIMA office, an accredited health facility, or through your employer. You and your dependants will have photographs and fingerprints captured for the membership card.
5Collect your NHIMA card and start contributions
Once processed, collect your card and keep contributions current. Formal employees contribute through payroll; self-employed members pay directly. Benefits are accessed at accredited facilities using the card.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Details on the form not matching the NRC or birth certificate
- Forgetting to list dependants, which means they are not covered
- Missing passport-size photographs or supporting certificates
- Employers registering staff without first registering the business
- Letting contributions lapse, which suspends access to benefits
