How to Apply for an NRC in Zambia

Your National Registration Card is the key identity document for almost everything in Zambia. This guide explains how to apply or replace one, with a pre-filled sample form so you get the paperwork right the first time.

1Confirm your eligibility

Zambian citizens aged 16 and above are required to have a National Registration Card (NRC). First-time applicants, replacements for lost cards, and corrections all use slightly different processes at the Department of National Registration.

2Gather supporting documents

First-time applicants typically need a birth certificate and, where applicable, a parent's or guardian's NRC. For a replacement, a police report for a lost card is usually required.

3Fill in the registration form

Complete the NRC application form with your details exactly as they appear on your supporting documents. Spelling differences between the form and your birth certificate are the most common reason applications are sent back.

4Submit and capture biometrics

Submit your form and documents at a National Registration office. Your photo and fingerprints are captured on the spot, so apply in person.

5Collect your NRC

Processing times vary by district. You will be told when to return for collection. Your NRC unlocks everything else — bank accounts, SIM registration, PACRA, ZRA, and passport applications.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Spelling differences between the form and your birth certificate
  • Missing supporting documents at submission
  • No police report when replacing a lost card
  • Unsigned or incomplete declaration sections
