How to Open a Bank Account in Zambia
Banks in Zambia follow strict know-your-customer rules, so most delays come from incomplete paperwork. This guide covers personal and business accounts, with pre-filled sample forms so you can see how each section should be completed.
1Decide between a personal and a business account
A personal account is opened in your own name with your NRC. A business account is opened in the registered name of the business and requires company documents plus a resolution naming the signatories.
2Gather your KYC documents
Personal accounts typically need your NRC or passport, a passport-size photo, proof of address such as a utility bill or landlord letter, and proof of income or an introductory letter. Business accounts add the PACRA certificate, TPIN certificate, and directors' NRCs.
3Fill in the account opening form
Complete your personal or company details, account type, currency, source of funds, and expected transaction activity. Sign exactly the same way each time — the signature on the form becomes your specimen signature.
4Add signatories and mandates
For business accounts, state who may sign and whether signing is single or joint. Each signatory completes their own specimen signature card and supplies their NRC and photograph.
5Submit and activate the account
Submit the form and documents at the branch, make the minimum opening deposit if required, and collect your account number. Your card and online banking details follow once the account passes compliance checks.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Signature on the form differing from the one on your NRC or card
- Proof of address that is out of date or in someone else's name
- Business account opened without a PACRA certificate and TPIN
- Leaving the source of funds or expected activity section blank
- Missing signatory details, which stalls the account mandate
