How to Get a TPIN from ZRA in Zambia
A TPIN is your first step into Zambia's formal economy — you need it for banking, business registration, and tax compliance. This guide explains the process, with pre-filled sample forms so you can complete yours correctly the first time.
1Confirm you need a TPIN
A Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN) is required for opening a business bank account, registering a company, importing or exporting, and most formal business transactions in Zambia. Individuals and businesses both need one for tax purposes.
2Gather your documents
Individuals need their NRC or passport. Businesses need their PACRA certificate of registration or incorporation, plus the NRCs of directors or partners. Make sure every name matches the supporting document exactly.
3Fill in the TPIN registration form
Complete the ZRA taxpayer registration form with your personal or business details, contact information, and the type of tax you are registering for. Errors in ID numbers, dates of birth, or business names are the most common cause of rejection.
4Submit to ZRA
Submit the completed form at any ZRA office or through the ZRA online portal. Individual TPIN registration is free. Keep your acknowledgement slip until your TPIN certificate is issued.
5Receive your TPIN
Once processed, ZRA issues your TPIN certificate. You can then open a business bank account, register for other tax types such as VAT or PAYE, and transact formally.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Name on the form not matching your NRC or PACRA certificate
- Wrong or incomplete NRC / registration numbers
- Ticking the wrong taxpayer category
- Submitting without the required supporting documents
